Horseback Riding in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

It's cold in the mornings here. Rainy. Hilly. But worth it.

There are lots of stray dogs and locals who look at me with a sense of familiarity. Seeing past my American mannerisms and into my Latina soul. And I love it. There's this air of "home" and it just feels right.

I found two great things here in Monteverde: a horse named Pinto and a great soda serving large portions of comida tipica  for only 2,600 CRC.

Horseback riding in Monteverde:

There are a number of horseback riding tours you can request while in Monteverde / Santa Elena. The Monteverde Backpackers Hostel I stayed at had a notebook full of local experiences to book and I chose a horseback riding tour with two friends. It cost about $35.

I rode Pinto to the top of the mountain vista just in time to catch a beautiful rainbow after the day's sun shower. Pinto was kind enough to take a photo with me… completely forgiving me for my initial apprehension.

Horseback riding was one of my favorite things to do in Monteverde. It was extremely relaxing (after I got comfortable) and was a surprising workout! Between clenching my thighs if fear of skipping off, and sitting up straight to engage my core and promote balance, I actually found some enjoyable wellness benefits from riding.
